COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND ENERGETICS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM PROVING SUCCESSFUL

La Plata, MD, July 15, 2010 – The College of Southern Maryland’s (CSM) Energetics Scholarship Program is off to an energetic start with the recent graduation of nine students from the first group of fifteen students. The remaining six students are anticipated to graduate this summer or fall, and all students are focused on attaining degrees in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM).

A graduation dinner, hosted by the CSM Energetics Scholarship Program Coordinator, Bobby Marino, was held earlier this summer at Crabby Dicks in Port Tobacco, Maryland. The scholarship program is funded by the Energetics Technology Center (ETC) in La Plata, Maryland as part of its commitment to support efforts which increase students’ interest in STEM education and careers. Retired Admiral Tom Donaldson, USN, President of ETC, was on hand to present graduation certificates.

One student enrolled in the program, Shane Gargano, is interning at ETC providing IT support as he prepares to graduate later this summer. Shane commented, “The scholarship funding is helping me obtain my Associates degree in Information System Security at CSM and I intend to enroll in the Cyber Security program at UMUC in the fall.”

The current program involves 50 students, grouped into three cohorts and the benefits include scholarship funding, individualized academic advisement, counseling and tutoring, and assistance in transferring to a four-year university. The final group of 22 students will begin their program in the Fall semester. The scholarship amount available is $3,000 issued in increments of $750 per qualifying semester to students who maintain a minimum GPA of 2.8 in their field of study.
